Chiang Dao Cave, Chiang Mai

It takes about an hour to reach Chiang Dao by car from Chiang Mai on Route is about 72 kms.

Being part of Doi Chiang Dao mountain, this well-known cave complex so expect a number of people if you go weekends.  The cave is illuminated by electric lights to where some Buddha images are enshrined but the majority of the cave system is not so, best to hire a guide and they supply proper lanterns for lighting as the cave have deep drop offs that need to be avoided.

The stalagmites and other formations in the Chiang Dao Cave are beautiful but hard to photograph so bring hand held flash for your camera as the cave is dark, the the normal flash seems to drop off very short. You will also find some have been named and tagged ewith ruely Thai names... Gai - chicken, Kai - egg, Hua Chang - elephant head, ngoo -snake, etc...

You will find the cave to be very hot and humid and if you wear silver be sure to leave it behind unless you wish to have to clean it as it will turn a black in the cave.As well be aware if you are at all claustrophobic be aware it does get tight in there.

The local legend that this cave was once the home of a hermit for a thousand years, adds more attraction to the cave for many Thai people. (Km. 72 on Route 107)
