My Road trip to Phayao

The road trip to Phayao is not what every website or guide book would recommend as is not so trendy, or historical as to warrant a multi day visit but it certainly is worth the drive, and a nights accommodation.

I only actually did it because, years ago, my mom had several staff from Phayao and they always quite after a few months and returned home being homesick. So after finding this odd she mentioned it to a fellow business women who said she never hires Phayao people for just that reason. Mom says are truly friendly and hard working but they just miss home and return. So after a delay of some 10 years she decided before she is a widow best she goes to see it. As mom doesn't drive and dad is getting on in years. So my whole family went to Phayao for two days.

The drive is easy and the scenery on the way is nice with a waterfall called Tarn Tong Waterfall worth the hour late lunch stop, along the way. shortly later we stopped at  view point just as you about to descend into the Phayao valley, it was smokey with limited visibility and well the rest area was just covered with litter and the lazy vendors could care less about it, so we certainly didn't support them financially by buying any snacks.

We arrived mid-afternoon at Phayao city and stopped at the lakes edge in the city and saw the temple being built in the lake you can get there by teak long boat or a self peddled "Pedal Boats". It will be nice but not to sure other than a tourist attraction why to put it there, guess it makes money for the locals paddling tourist out to see it.

We explored the small city and found a great clean hotel just on the other side of the highway called Phayao Grand room  - no pool or much but clean and friendly but dad likes it as was really cheap. Then had dinner at yes "MK" what truly Thai family travel all that way and eat at an MK which we have in Chiang Mai, but what the heck, we like it.

Then returned to the lake and played on the children slides and exercise equipment in the park (my dad of course was impressed with the simple and well thought out design) with the locals and saw them enjoy the water show and some Thai massage in the park (a local hang out) along with a few Bangkok "Vieloon" also on a road trip. It made me wonder why Chiang Mai doesn't have any such things for our residents to enjoy? Maybe they should visit Phayao!

Well next morning we enjoyed a light breakfast and did some temples, fish hatchery and bid a fond farewell to Phayao and I am sure to return someday in the not to distant future.

Chiang Rai here we come...

Doi Chom Thong has been a sacred site for aextremely long time. The site was surely reverenced as the home of local spirits before Buddhism arrived in the area.
