Cars and Trucks in Chiang Mai

Songtaew - poor man's taxi

The basic way to get around the city is Chiang Mai is to take a Songtaew.

There are two types fixed routes and the roaming type that will take you anywhere like a taxi but they will pick up others along the way.  Ask the price before the journey starts. They are normally not as rude or greedy as TukTuks but every once in a while some are.

The red songtaews are the roaming ones with in the city. The yellow, blue, green and white have fixed routes out of the city.

They are covered pick-up trucks with two benches in the back, and indeed songthaew means "two benches" in Thai.

To board one just put your arm out and look at the driver, who will stop. Then tell the driver which street or place you want to go to, and if he is going that way, he will nod his head "yes"; if not, he will say "no" and go on. Don't worry - there will be another one right behind him. When the driver turns down the street you want, start looking for where you want to get off and press the switch located on the roof of the cab. The driver will pull over, let you out, and then you pay him. The fare should be 20 baht per head for regular trips around town.[if on the same side of the river]

From Warorot Market, white songthaews travel to the eastern suburban city of Sankampaeng, yellowblue songthaews travel to Sarapee and Lamphun in the south, and green songthaews travel to Mae Jo in the north-east. The flat rate cost along these fixed routes is 20 baht. songthaews travel to Doi Saket in the north,

From Pratu Chiang Mai market, Yellow songthaews also travel to Hang Dong (20 baht) and San Patong, south-west of Chiang Mai.There too are large Blue Buses that go to Hod too.

Chiang Rai

on the bank of the Kok River within town area, contains what is believed to be the oldest Holy Relic even before King Mengrai built Chiang Rai. Doi Chom Thong has been a sacred site for aextremely long time. The site was surely reverenced as the home of local spirits before Buddhism arrived in the area.
