Skateboarding, BMX and Motocross in Chaing Mai

Some Pro-Sport foreigners also found Thailand as an excellent place to live and practice Sport. They give their knowledge and heart like the Thai’s to them. Sport connects people around the world – obviously a great and for some the best supplement of it.

Skateboarding

The skateboard scene is increasingly growing and with Thailand’s first own skateboard company Preduce on a good way. Since 2002 this Thai/Swiss company produces its own decks and clothing line. Further they sponsor and organize contests. Check out the Preduce website or follow them at Facebook

Thai Skate websites or blogs (some in English and some only in Thai) around the topic skateboard are ThaiGoSkate.com , ConcreteDisciples.com , FellowSkate.com (also on Facebook ) and SkateGang.com .

In Chiang Mai are different groups in different ages but all mostly of the younger generation and mainly students. They have different places to practice their sport and often share the space with BMX driver. When the sun begins to go down at 5.pm. and the temperature is rising they begin. Unfortunately and sadly Chiang Mai has no indoor Skate park and indeed no real Skate park.

The probably biggest most skate-promoting group in Chiang Mai is at Big C (208 Moo, Tambon,Thasala, 50000 Chiang Mai - not the Big C store on the way to Hang Dong) Google Maps). At this spot you can also meet some drivers from the Preduce team (like Gaeng Jakkarin) and the guy who runs the Chiang Mai Preduce Shop (Tao Kitpullap. The shop is on the opposite from Tapae Gate, next to Mc Donald’s). Stay updated through Facebook.

An easy search at YouTube.com with the keywords ‘Chiang Mai Skater’ will lead to several clips (for example ‘Chiang Mai 2010, A Year In Skateboarding’).

One further spot to drive is the Think Park. It is located at the corner of the intersection Huay Kaew/Nimmanhaemin Road.

It does not provide any features to skate like Ramps or poles but the little given ground is smooth to skate.

Further some people meet next to Kad Suan Kaew (shopping mall) near the parking lot or on the opposite from the Yamaha Shop (on the same side).

At the municipal stadium (close to Chang Puak Bus station and Rajabaht University) on Sanarnkela Road (when following Chang Puak Road from Chang Puak Gate or North Gate and turning right into Chang Puak Soi 2) is a small group either and mixed with BMX driver. The spot is pretty small but they have a small ramp. At the stadium in addition can people do close to every sporty activity like Boxing, Basketball or Football, Jogging or strength training and etc. Therefore it is a fairly crowded place.

What the skateboard scene allover has in common are their open, communicative and free minded skaters. Everyone is absolutely welcome.

No matter which location you choose - yet it is better if you bring your own board with you and of course protective equipment.

Skate shops

Skate stuff like clothes, shoes, boards and further equipment you can get at Precuce - the newest and far best Skate shop and run by Tao Kitpullap (Pro Skaters from Preduce) is located on the opposite from Tapae Gate . It’s a small shop but full packed. Of course they do not only sell stuff from Preduce. Nearly every famous brand can be acquired there. Check their location at Google Maps for easy finding or also Facebook.

Another shop is at Kad Suan Kaew on the 4th floor. They have a wide range of boards, equipment like wheels, bolts, appropriate tools as well as shoes and clothes (from Vans to Emerica and et cetera).

BMX

The blog cm-bmx.blogspot.com is usually full with information for BMX driver and also post news about skateboarding.

Like the skateboarding driving BMX is increasingly growing in number and their participants. Promoting and to keep updated websites (in Thai) are ThaiBMX.com or BMXRacingThailand.com . Unfortunately no one runs a website in English. However the skaters seem to promote and popularize themselves more.

On every last Friday of the month they meet at the square in front of Tapae Gate (skaters are also welcome or everyone on wheels) to drive around the city and after to hang out jovial.

BMX/Bike shops

The skaters and BMX driver have relatively the same clothing style and therefore you can find clothes at the same fashion shops like skaters (read through the ‘skateboarding’ section).

To find a BMX bike in Chiang Mai is not that easy because mainly they sell just Mountain bikes.

But one shop can be found at Arak Road in the moat (third or firth U-Turn from Bunrueang Road) on the left side. It is a small shop and easy to miss. In front of the shop mostly some guys hang out and do something on their bike.

Another shop is located at Huay Kaew Road on the same side of Kad Suan Kaew is. Follow the Huay Kaew Road on the way to Chiang Mai University approximately five to ten minutes.

At Chang Moi Road (on the way to Worort market) is another store to find.

Motocross

Chiang Mai and its surrounding are popular for adventure rides and recently enjoys a surge in popularity. Now there are many tours provided for several routes.

Some Parks have established like the ‘Chiang Mai Motocross Park’ on the way to Mae Rim. They have track facilities and you can rent minibikes, motorcycles and ATV’s. Take a look at their website for details. The Chiang Mai Motocross Park’ is located in Maesa Valley, Maerim. Just head straight up the way at Chang Puak Gate (Chang Puak Road) on the way to Mae Rim or the highway 1096, pass the X-Center and then turn right.

The X-Center itself offers a variety of activities. You can try for example one of their off road tours by motorcycle or buggy into the hills that overlook the Mae Rim Valley or you try the indoor drifter karts. Further groups can spend some time with playing paintball, do some bungee jumping from their 165 feet high custom-built tower or roll down a hill inside the ‘Xorb Ball’. Keep updated and informed through their website and check their location at Google Maps !

Another park is ‘Nim See Sing Motocross Park’ on the way to Lampang (go down the superhighway towards Lampang, past Big C and after 4 km on the right side you will see a big red sign with a motorbike on it).

Motocross/Motorcycle Shops

Chiang Mai has in comparison to skate and BMX shops a lot more motocross or motorcycle shops. They offer everything what is needed.

Chiang Mai Motocross Shop’ 355 Moon Muang Road, Tambon Sriphum, 50200 Chiang Mai located.

Samoto 16 Mahidol Road, Tambon Haiya, 50100 Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai Biker Shop’ is at 97-98 Mahidol Road.

Piston Shop (49/3 Assadathon Road),
Burning (58 Kaew Nawarat Road) or
Richo Motorsports & Powder Coating’ (1/2 Wulalai Road Soi 3.
Other shops throughout the city are very easy to find.
