Kwan Phayao - Phayao lake

Kwan Phayao

Kwan Phayao is a popular attraction of the Phayao area. Not just in Phayao, the freshwater lake is among the largest semi natural wetlands in the entire northern Thailand. The total area of the lake is 1,980 hectares and it is bordered by beautiful rice paddy of approximately 3,000 hectares to the west and south. On the northern border of the lake, you can find a swampy area and some old oxbows. This is the area where the Nam Mae Ing mixes with the lake. However, the eastern part of Kwan Phayao is well developed and on the southeast portion, the Phayao town is based. The lake empties into the Mekong passing through the Nam Mae lag.

Public ownership prevails as tenure of the lake in almost the entire parts except the neighboring shoreline that is owned privately. The area of the lake is encircled by farmland, which is owned privately. Many tenant farmers are given lease to use much of the farmland. Cultivation of rice paddy; lotus takes place randomly in Kwan Phayao, whereas in the adjacent areas, maize, tobacco, green vegetables and groundnuts are cultivated. The main vegetation of the cultivated area of Kwan Phayao has recorded 36 different varieties of aquatic plants. Ceratophyllum demersum and Najas graminea are the major underwater plants while the other plantations mainly include Salvinia cucullata, Nelumbo nucifera, Eichhornia crassipes, and Scirpus grossus.

Underwater cultivation is carried out in a significant manner in Kwan Phayao. The estimated mass of fishing crop per hectare is approximately 159 kilograms. There is expected to be around twenty two different varieties of fishes, but almost the entire biomass of the fishes is formed by just about five species. Fish varieties such as Anabas testudineus and Tilapia nilolica enjoy the most productivity every year, which is around 2.19 kg/ha/year and 21.9 kg/ha/year respectively.
